About

Channeling the brainy, romantic and tired fury of 90s acts such as Bedhead, Unwound and Karate, Chop Sue Me offer dynamic, emotional and lenghty soundscapes with catchy melodies and intricate instrumentation. Flowing seamlessly between power pop, post-hardcore, post-rock and slowcore, the band delivers no matter the genre they put their twist on.

Formed in 2018, Chop Sue Me slowly became a gem of the Montreal underground circuit. Originally founded by Jonathan Theriault (guitar, vocals) and Antoine Morin (bass), the band lost and found members until they settled on Michael Jalil Khayat on drums in late 2024. The recent addition of Akira Sato on guitar expanded the territories the band can cover even further.

2023 saw the release of their self-titled album, a collection of 6 songs ranging from slowcore to noise-rock, that was released on the Montreal indie Hell For Breakfast. It was subsequently nomitated for a GAMIQ in 2024 in the post-punk category. They recently released two new singles; "Irish Exit" in november 2025 and "Look Alive", in february 2026, both recorded at the historic Théâtre Outremont in Montreal.

Their live shows are captivating, thanks to their creative songwriting that rarely employs the structure of a standard pop song. Theriault's vocals, with their idiosyncratic timbre and surprising power shine bright atop the often-loud guitars and powerful rhythm section. The humoristic, existential and often profane writing is masterful and profound despite its reluctance to take what it discusses too seriously. Chop Sue Me is a band that can't be ignored.

"Second EP from Chop Sue Me who is starting to leave its mark in the scene with their pretty efficient punk rock. The group has landed on a nice balance of convincing melodies and a certain heaviness. They're not the heaviest in the genre, but they get into some interesting riffing and lines. A good EP released in October that warrants a detour".

"[...] their performance last night was once again, engraved in my heart and soul. Their songs, being heavy but soaked with tender picking, notes and grooves that ensure your mind to float above the stage for the duration of the set. Nowadays so many genres exist, but to keep it simple, their music is like Radiohead's sleepy hypnotic sounds mixed with Nirvana's heavyness and rythms".

The Stoned Poet

"Chop Sue Me, the hard to define trio, kicked off the night. A blend of punk-rock, emo, noise-rock, grunge and even a little bit of stoner. I also heard some jazzy sounds during the more experimental sections of their songs; overall, they're quite a unique band. They've come through Quebec City a couple times already and we could feel the crowd for Thick Glasses' release appreciate the band quite a lot, having come early and the venue being quite full already".

"What a banger from Chop Sue Me; after the first listen of Look Alive, I had to listen to it again three times since it impressed me so much. I already can't wait for the band's return to Quebec City to hear this song live, it sure will be a key moment of their performances".
